Thirteen of its athletes will arrive in the Pontedilegno-Tonale area on Sunday, September 17th , to take part in the new Vertical Kilometer event. “The goal is to strengthen our relationship with this area and, starting next season, to include this event in our Coppa Italia calendar”, said head coach Roberto Mattioli
The new Adamello Vertical Kilometer has what it takes to make a dream debut. The event, which will take place on Sunday, September 17th, starting from Vione (Brescia), will be enriched by the presence of a delegation from the Italian Skyrunning National Team (FISKY), led by head coach Roberto Mattioli.
The Vertical Kilometer (which is part of the “Adamello Series”, featuring the side events of the Adamello Ultra Trail) has a 3.9 km course with 1,000 meters of elevation gain and will meander through the enchanting landscape of the Alta Val Camonica. From Vione, 1,250 m above sea level, the course will end in Tor dei Pagà, the highest archaeological site in Europe. A place that still holds some secrets about its origins, but that is preparing to welcome fans and athletes for the first time.
“The introduction of an event like the Adamello Vertical Kilometer is definitely very important for our movement”, Mattioli said: “There are already many races in Lombardy, but this is the first to be held in this area. Our goal is to build a lasting relationship and make the Adamello Vertical a flagship event for the entire region: we would love to include it in our Coppa Italia calendar next year“.
The Adamello Vertical Kilometer will feature five top Italian athletes: skyrunning vice-World champion Marcello Ugazio, and his teammates Nicholas Dresti, Simone Dalle, Matteo Lora, and Corinna Ghirardi who won the silver medal at the European Championships in Montenegro in July.
In the Adamello Vertical Junior, the youth race over a distance of 3 km with 700 meters of elevation gain, the Italian national team will compete with a strong lineup of young athletes, consisting of Davide Gadin, Erik Brunod, Matteo Blangero, Didier Chaberge and Riccardo Chiolerio.
“The inclusion of a Vertical youth event in the calendar helps FISKY to address the ever-increasing number of young skyrunners,” Mattioli said. “From this perspective, the Adamello Trail Junior is very important as well: trail running can be a first step towards skyrunning”.
The athletes from the Italian National Skyrunning Team will arrive in the area on Friday, September 15h: together with them there will be two fitness coaches, with the intention of running some tests on the course. The Adamello Vertical Kilometer will start on Sunday, September 17th, at 9 AM CEST.
